DANCE: Akademi presents Choreogata & Utkarsh – South Asian dance

Akademi presents an evening of new contemporary and classical South Asian Dance commissions at Southbank Centre on Friday 4th September.

One half of the evening is classical Indian dance, from the intricate footwork of kathak to the sculpturesque composition of kuchipudi and the other half combines dance techniques including western contemporary dance.

The show is the culmination of two development programmes created by Akademi to promote South Asian dance. UTKARSH is an annual classical Indian dance choreographic development opportunity that supports two South Asian dance artists from the UK. This year’s artists are Arunima Kumar and Urja Desai Thakore.

CHOREOGATA is an open application choreographic commission for dance makers with a professional background in a classical South Asian dance style, giving them the opportunity to create new contemporary work. Artists Kamala Devam and Subhash Viman received this £5,000 commission.
