Everything slows down in this pretty labyrinth of olde world alleys which also contains L’Autre, a remarkable Polish-Mexican fusion bistro.
Shepherd Market Wine House is sister to Pall Mall Fine Wine and London Beer House – also tucked away nearby in the Royal Opera Arcade in St James’s – and they are all buzzing. This place is proof that the wine bar is coming back – a further look around London confirms this, with top end 67 Pall Mall to fun and interesting 68 and Boston.
Along with the wines, nibbles – including superb tapas platters with delicious Comte cheese and huge windows make this a perfect spot for people watching.
Heading up the Shepherd Market Wine House team is sommelier, Ben Van de Meutter who proposes an eclectic selection of wines from around the world ready for drinking immediately. The list is has around 20 wines, including sparkling and Champagne, served by the glass from £6 to £10 and bottles from £30 to £250 – top end is the Montrachet.
Ground floor is a wine shop with a tasting area and seating for 16 to 18 and downstairs there’s an intimate semi-private tasting room for 8 alongside a seating area for 12 – 14 in the cellar. There is a no reservations policy for tables, however, the downstairs spaces are available for private hire.
There’s even a very reasonable £10 lunch deal for a hot sandwich and a glass of wine.
If there was an English Toulouse-Lautrec he would be painting the faces and soaking up the atmosphere here.
