All aboard the #DiscoverRum Appleton Estate Bus

“Tickets please, tickets please” Appleton Estate Jamaican Rum announces the first stop of the #DiscoverRum journey beginning with the official launch of the Appleton Estate Rum Bus at the Red Gallery Market, Shoreditch on Thursday 1st August 2013, where it will stay for two nights until Saturday 3rd August.

As part of the #DiscoverRum campaign the bus will stop at various UK destinations throughout the coming year. The launch sees East London favourite’s Background Bars turning out some classic rum cocktails, Cutlass Communications behind the PR and Silver Chair rolling out digital.

The launch event at Red Gallery, off Old Street, was cool – as it’s  come to be expected of Shoreditch. Think of it as London’s answer to the Bangkok night markets. Hundreds of people parked in the forecourt under tents and awnings with a dozen food stalls turning out tasty barbecue food. It’s free to enter and there are a couple of bars including the Appleton Estates Rum Bar but, thankfully, without a mojito in sight. Prosecco, egg whites, ginger beer, bitters and ice were being magically mixed by the hard working rum boys all night. The Jamaican Mule was a favourite and had a kick like a free-falling coconut.

As part of the launch Phonica Records will be pumping out the music, and Royal Warrant holders Charbonnel et Walker’s chocolatiers will be pairing aged rum range with their delectable chocolates.

Appleton Rum Estate Bus

erm, artist’s impression of the bus. we didn’t actually see it, as it was too big to get into the gallery forecourt in Shoreditch. last heard of circling the Old Street roundabout blasting out Pure Shores…

The 1960s bus has been restored and converted into a fully functioning mobile rum bus, complete with side opening bar (drinks served inside and out), low-level internal lighting amidst the tasting tables and booths. The bar is made in the same coach-building style as the bus itself – featuring hand riveted joints and rolled aluminium top with the interior maintaining all of the original features – from luggage racks to skylights and seats. The removed seats have been adapted to create an outdoor seating area and an interior furnished with vintage luggage and props.

The rum bus will be hosting talks, tastings and experiences as the route passes through various festivals around the country all summer, with confirmed dates at Lounge on the Farm, Foodies Festival Edinburgh, Foodies Feast Battersea and London Cocktail Week.
