Directed By Academy Award-Winning Sam Mendes, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory world premiere – Previews Open In London Next Month.
After its 2005 Tim Burton movie revival, the story of forlorn little Charlie Bucket and his life-changing golden ticket now makes the bold move from screen to stage, allowing Londoners to step into the magical world of Everlasting Gobstoppers and Wonka bars.
Roald Dahl’s delectably dark tale has captivated audiences for nearly 50 years and now Academy Award-winning director, Sam Mendes will be bringing it to life in a musical for the very first time. Director of Skyfall, the UK’s highest ever grossing film, this will be a new challenge for Mendes as it’s his first directing project of an original stage musical. The London show will also see four time Olivier-nominated Douglas Hodge play Willy Wonka, lyrics and original music by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman (Grammy winners for Hairspray and Smash) and choreography by Peter Darling.
Mark Thompson, known for his work on ‘Mamma Mia!’ and ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’, will be in charge of set design and is likely to transform London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane into an utterly surreal world of giant lollipops, dancing dwarfs and human blueberries.
The production will be the second recent West End show based on a Roald Dahl book, following the successful transition that Matilda the Musical made to the West End in 2011. .
