Summer Time Supper – Private Dining at London Marriott County Hall

During the £100m refurbishment work at London’s iconic Marriott Hotel County Hall the beautifully ornate former council rooms are being laid out for fun private dining. There are eight  rooms accommodating 10 to 72 guests for a sit-down lunch or dinner. The Horace Cutler room, named after a  Leader of the Council, is an ornate setting for this special summer treat.

Plush carpets, crisp linen, gilt frames, flowery sconces and pots of herbs set the scene for a delicious family-style supper. The table is set with a grass runner on which sit wicker baskets of devilled avocado and tomato stuffed cones, artisanal free-range English charcuterie board, pickles and fresh baked bread. Sharing wooden platters are grilled mackerel with pretty shaved pink onions, enormous Heritage tomatoes with English Mozzarella.

Hot courses are bowls of Ricotta ravioli with pine nuts and divine olive oil in the mint pesto, packed-full slow roasted Old Spot pork in brioche buns with a fiery Russian Marie Rose sauce. With the stunning, moist hunk of 45-day aged Angus beef, studded with juniper and crushed black pepper crust served with hot mustard and tiny Yorkshire puddings being the big show stopper.

A perfect, relaxed but stylish supper.

Washed down with wine (included in the price of about £80 per person) and tea or coffee with the deserts. Oh my the desserts! Chef Nick told us his recipe for the chocolate brownies was his American grandmother’s – it was sensational. Fondant melt-in-the-mouth chocolate with a squirt of banana cream and a crisp banana chip. Further spoiled for choice we also had a fruity sherry trifle with great sweet vanilla custard and interesting gin and tonic infused light meringue kisses.

The thing about the Marriott is they can call on all the talents of their phenomenal staff, you get your own butler for the room stood with a tray of County Hall Pimms on arrival, during our dinner Head Chef Gareth Bowen of in house steak house and bar Gillray’s popped in to explain the local provenance. He sources locally and get the meats from famous old O’Sheas, and St Johns in Bermondsey, he’s even grown the courgettes himself. Marriot has its own personalised sauces from Wilkin and Sons in those covetable Tiptree jars. The attention to detail and service is what you expect in a five star hotel. This felt intimate and fun. A stylish way to do Private Dining. We just needed Carson to cough politely in the corner and we would felt Downton home.

And there’s more. Stuffed as we were we headed up to the magnificent setting of the bar for the option of a gin tasting with head bar tender Sam at Gillray’s – home to over 100 gins.

And this world class view.
