Still need a fix of sport? You can get ready for Rio 2016 by taking notice of Junior Dos Santos, a 6′ 4″ mixed martial arts sportsman from Santa Catarina, Brasil. Known as the Gypsy, ‘cigano’ in Portuguese, he has an impressive knock out record.

Dos Santos is one of the stars of The Ultimate Fighting Championship  (UFC) which hosts over 30 bouts a year of the top-ranked fighters in the sport. UFC has its roots in Brasil as Vale tudo a full-contact, ‘anything goes’ unarmed combat, which has now been given rules where competitors use the most effective moves from Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Wrestling, Muay Thai, and Karate. The action takes place in the 750 square foot Octagon with walls and padded surfaces to protect fighters from falling out – or getting thrown out! 

UFC is returning to the UK on a rare visit at the 10,000 seater Capital FM Arena Nottingham on 29th September. Tickets are on sale here www.UFC.com from £75 upwards. 

One of the best British fighters in the UFC, Dan Hardy, is actually from Nottingham.
