A Right Royal Season

This summer is set to be a busy one for the British Royal Family, with 2013 marking 60 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation and also preparing to welcome the latest edition to the family firm.

Here are just some of the events, exhibitions and experiences taking place across the country in celebration of all things royal.

Following last year’s Diamond Jubilee, which marked 60 years since HM The Queen took over the throne following the death of her father, King George VI. But her official coronation was a year later, on 2 June 1953. The occasion will be marked with a Coronation Festival at Buckingham Palace from 11 – 14 July, showcasing more than 200 Royal Warrant Holders (companies awarded the seal of approval from The Queen, Prince of Wales and Duke of Edinburgh). The exhibitors range from Savile Row tailors Gieves & Hawkes and the chocolatier Prestat to the world-famous Fortnum & Mason and horse hay supplier RJ Tompkins. There will be gala concerts in the evenings attended by members of the public and of the Royal family. Tickets range from £30-90.

For the annual Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace this year, the Palace’s Ballroom will be transformed into the centre of the largest-ever exhibition about the Coronation. The dress, robes and uniforms worn by the principal royal party will be brought together for the first time since 2 June 1953. The display will include The Queen’s Coronation dress and robe; the uniform, robe and Coronet of The Duke of Edinburgh; the dress and robe of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother; the dress and robe of Princess Margaret; and the outfits worn on the day by two-year-old Princess Anne and four-year-old Prince Charles. The Prince’s personal invitation to Westminster Abbey will also be on display.

Visitors will also be able to see a number of the jewels worn by The Queen on Coronation Day and they tour the State Rooms, learn how individual rooms were used in 1953, for example, the Green Drawing Room where Cecil Beaton took famous Coronation portraits of The Queen.

Finally, the announcement that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their first child left the country in a state of excitement and anticipation. Babymoons are set to boom this summer as parents-to-be relax and recharge, enjoying their time together before two becomes three. Chewton Glen in Hampshire is an English original, spot on for a truly memorable last trip for DINKY (double income, no kids yet) couples. Putting expectant mums first, the luxury country house hotel offers a Pregnancy Glow package in its luxury spa. Remember when the Duke of Cambridge set tongues wagging when he so enthusiastically received a baby grow with the slogan ‘Daddy’s little co-pilot’ during a royal visit to the city that gave them their official title? Cambridge is the obvious location for a romantic babymoon fit for royal. Stay at The Varsity Hotel & Spa, the most romantic spot in the city, with picture perfect views over Cambridge (Read my review here). The boutique hotel has 48 rooms and is decorated in a quintessentially English style. Meanwhile, the Forge Yoga Centre in Devon is helping keep expectant mothers fit and healthy during pregnancy with an evening class specifically designed for pregnant women.

Three Cheers, whatto!
