Documentary: Studio One Forever – America’s First Gay Disco

STUDIO ONE FOREVER the story of America’s first gay disco, is a kaleidoscopic excursion into LGBTQ+ history through the lens of this groundbreaking club.
From 1974 to 1994, Studio One  in Los Angeles and its adjoining live music venue, The Backlot, became symbols of hope and community for gay men. Amidst the rise of gay rights, disco’s heyday, the club offered sanctuary from rampant homophobia and police oppression.
Through personal accounts, the documentary delves into Studio One’s story against the backdrop of a progressing gay liberation clashing with 80s conservatism and the escalating AIDS crisis. It’s a testament to an era, immortalising the club’s legacy and its place in queer history.
The documentary features interviews with Chita Rivera, Bruce Vilanch, Sam Harris, Felipe Rose, Charlo Crossley, Melissa Rivers, Roslyn Kind, Lance Bass, Thelma Houston, Julie Budd and many more, accompanied with narration by Bruce Vilanch and David Del Valle. Plus, music by Donna Summer, Sylvester, Thelma Houston, Village People and Bronski Beat.
Studio One Forever has received critical acclaim at the Austin Film Festival (Jury Award Nominee – Best Documentary Feature), BFI Flare London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival (Official Selection), and Palm Springs International Film Festival (Best of Fest – Audience Favourites).
