Now here’s a bar without a bar. MakeShift Bar is adventurously un-barlike; there is no conventional bar counter and no bar stool in sight.
During the daytime it’s a brunch restaurant and coffee hatch.
By night, the space transforms into the new MakeShift Bar, where you watch bartenders crafting cocktails in the picture window and brought to your table.
It’s from Josh Powell who owns The Natural Philosopher, the curiosity-bar set inside a Mac repair shop in Bethnal Green.

MakeShift Bar has evolved from his years of experience in perfecting the classics whilst exploring ever-inventive new liqueurs, bitters, aromatics, modifiers and unusual natural botanicals.
A novel approach to cocktail creation – by weight and density.
The core menu of six classic drinks is transformed by 48 different variations.
Unusually, the bar team does not mix using traditional volume measuring jiggers. Instead, you see precision scales to calculate weight and density in the mix, reflecting the diversity of ingredients used.
Cocktails are £12 and there’s far from ordinary bar food too – the signature is the Big Schnitz, a chicken schnitzel with lemon caper butter, chive mayo and pickles, in a potato brioche bun.
