Well this got me out of bed on Sunday morning. A philosophy slam organised by Oatly, an alternative milk drink, disrupting humdrum morning routines via a series of breakfast events across London.
At the Philosophy for Breakfast in The School of Life, 70 Marchmont Street, WC1N 1AB two thinkers – Robert Rowland Smith and Mark Vernon bounced from topic to topic as demanded by the audience. Mulling over topics such as breakfast itself, the known and unknown universe, conspiracy theories as parallel truths, can we spot a genius when there is so much content on the web and does time goes faster when you are getting on? Ideas washed down by Oatly – which is like milk, but made for humans.
A couple of decades ago the Swedes looked at the nutritional power of oats and thought: what if we forgot the cow altogether and turned these oats into a drink. So they did. Oatly’s philosophy is maximum nutritional value and minimal environmental impact – everything they make is based on plants. Absolutely nothing has anything to do with the animal kingdom whatsoever. No GMOs. Full of fibre and fascinating betaglucans. Swedish oats are rather unique – due to a climate of long sunny summer days mixed with short periods of intense rain and pesticides that are used on oats in the rest of Europe are totally forbidden in Sweden.
So wake up and smell the coffee – it’s a great product and it isn’t milk so don’t expect it to look like milk -and enjoy an abundant breakfast of smoothies, granolas, porridges and intensely cinnamon rolls with a stimulating experience before most Londoners have even put on their pants.
To launch in the UK there are a quirky mix of morning events follow, before the series culminates in a high-octane morning rave in conjunction with the worldwide cult event, Morning Gloryville, where a top international DJ will be performing (we can’t say who just yet!).
