Review: The Lehman Trilogy

This gem of a play had a sold-out run at the National Theatre and then transferred to West End’s Piccadilly Theatre for an equally successful run. It’s now set for Broadway in 2020, so no better time than to shine a light on it.

This New York Times Critic’s Pick comes to Broadway direct from three sold-out runs at the National Theatre, the Park Avenue Armory and London’s West End.

Theatre Review by Bee.

Starting with the crash of the Lehman Bank in 2008, it immediately steps back to 1844, when the first Lehman brother arrived in America. Followed by 2 brothers in the following years, the 3 of them build a capitalist empire out of a simple clothing and suits business.

With a backdrop of video projections and a revolving stage, that dangerously turns and turns (stage design by Es Devlin), you are sucked into the story. And using the boxes of the departing Lehman employees of 2008 as props to illustrate changing sets, the outstanding director Sam Mendes manages to create a wonder – involving the audience deeply in the proceedings and the characters and making you understand how the monstrosity of the bank crash could evolve. Special shout out to the live pianist, who gave the play its soul with the haunting score.

And then there are the actors: Simon Russell Beale, Ben Miles and Adam Godley. All three of them performing all of the several dozens of roles – from crying babies to blushing brides and the original brothers.

It is beyond amazing, how these three gentlemen convey genders, ages, personalities without any change of costume – just with their enormous talents.

Simply flawless performances!

From the first words of Simon Russell Beale as Henry to the bitter end you will not find a more engaging and fascinating group of actors on stage.

Broadway previews start on March 7 2020

And for those of you not able to go to New York: National Theatre live has a cinema transmission and is still doing encore presentations all over the world.

If you miss out on this, you will have missed a piece of theatre history!
