The Dagwood Sandwich

We hadn’t heard of a Dagwood Sandwich before.  Apparently it was named after Dagwood Bumstead, a central character in the comic strip Blondie, who is frequently illustrated making enormous sandwiches from a mountainous pile of dissimilar leftovers precariously arranged between two slices of bread.

Here’s a more elegant recipe –  three slices of deli bread, salami, ham, pepperoni, turkey, cheddar, Provolone, lettuce, tomato, roasted peppers, red onion, mustard, and mayonnaise.

We made the one on the left, topped with a poached egg and a dribble of balsamic. It’s like a club sandwich but more tasty and a bit more sloppy. Do you have a favourite combination or, like us, it’s different every time depending on what’s in the fridge? We use emmental cheese not provolone.

If you want a shop-bought one you can find Dagwood’s Sandwich Shoppes, founded in 2006, in Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, and Georgia where the Dagwood is sold as a 1.5-pound sandwich. To fit in with the cartoon theme there’s even a counter-service restaurant named Blondie’s at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure.

The comic strip was created by Murat Bernard ‘Chic’ Young (1901 – 1973) and features the adventures of Blondie Boopadoop — a carefree flapper girl who marries her boyfriend Dagwood Bumstead, the son of a wealthy industrialist.

The strip has been published in newspapers since September 8, 1930.
