Time to Start Dreaming of a Vilnius Christmas

Trips to Christmas markets just don’t happen by themselves, do they? So it’s October in Europe and it’s getting a little chilly. Time to start dreaming about Vilnius, Lithuania – which promises a fairytale-like experience and one of the best trees around. If last year’s mesmerising clock tree is anything to go, by  Cathedral Square will once again be in the top 25 Christmas lights displays around the world.

The appearance of this year’s main tree is still kept a secret, it will be lit in the Cathedral Square on the 30th of November until 7th of January, the day of the Orthodox Christmas. A second Christmas tree, located in the Town Hall Square, will be lit on the same day.

Traditional Christmas villages will be open at both the Cathedral and the Town Hall Squares with hand-made gifts while staying warm and happy by drinking hot chocolate or hot wine and enjoying a variety of sweets such as waffles and traditional honey cakes.

There are many other markets such as Design Square, charity bazaars and Uptown Christmas –  a last minute market where more than 100 local designers and creators will offer their works. The open-air Christmas ice skating rink at the Lukiškės Square will be open from the 13th of December to the 7th of January.

The 3D fairytale The Snow Queen, taking place between the 25th and the 29th of December is illuminated on the wall of the Vilnius Cathedral making it a recent yet beautiful Vilnius Christmas tradition.

Finally, every kid loves a train ride, especially if it is on the Vilnius Christmas Train. A hit among children every year, the decorated Christmas train circles around the fairy-tale-like city centre of Vilnius from the 30th November.
