Ever since that scene in Eat, Pray Love at famed Naples pizzeria L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele I’ve been praying for something like it in London. Neapolitan pizza, for me it’s all about the thickness, or should that be thinness. None of that tomato paste on soggy cardboard bases. Pizza should be crisp and simple. There are a couple of decent places in Soho, Princi in Wardour Street and recently discovered great pizzas at Spuntino in Rupert Street, So news reaches us of Pizza Pilgrims opening their own permanent pizzeria on Dean Street at the beginning of August.
The pizzeria menu will be simple, featuring some of the street van favourites, such as the classic Neapolitan margherita, Portobello mushroom and smoked garlic oil, and spicy Nduja sausage, as well as other new additions for a dessert pizza made wih Nutella.
A specially selected drinks menu will be on offer, including Prosecco, Lambrusco wines and other Italian favourites such as Birra Moretti and San Pellegrino soft drinks. And in this beautiful weather refreshing sorbets, including frozen blood orange and Amalfi lemon.
Launched in September 2011, brothers James and Thom Elliot began their very own pilgrimage setting off to Italy to discover the true art of pizza making. Converting their humble Piaggio Ape van into a mobile kitchen the pair have brought a taste of Italy to London with their Napoli inspired street food.
