In January 2012, Jack Hemingway and Sarah Kemp set themselves a huge culinary challenge – to eat a dish from every single country taking part in the London 2012 Olympics.
They have been so excited about the Olympics coming to their city this summer, but like so many other Londoners, they didn’t manage to get hold of the tickets they wanted. But instead of getting bogged down and depressed, they decided to throw themselves into it in another way.
From now until the closing ceremony on 12th August 2012, you can follow their journey, literally, eating their way around the Olympics From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, they would sample a national dish, take photographs, and write about their experiences on their blog, Eat the Olympics. The dishes are awarded gold, silver and bronze medals – gold winners, so far, are
Flan de Leche from El Salvador, Fijian grilled aubergine with coconut sauce, Chilean braised chicken with coriander, and lime meringue pie from the Ivory Coast are just some of the dishes that have been awarded the gold medal.
Four months, 90 dishes, a double page feature in The Independent with syndication all over the world (Sarah’s dad was shocked to open The Times of India on a business trip and see his daughters face smiling out at him), an interview on German television, a feature in Hong Kong’s largest travel magazine, an interview on Monocle radio and a brand new flat later and they are ready to share their culinary experiments with you.
They got off to the perfect start, racing ahead and completing thirty dishes in the first two weeks. But as the warmer weather rolls in and the work commitments increase, they have found it increasingly hard to stick to their original plan of cooking every evening. And with a flat sitting empty while they get planning permission to knock down a wall, they have decided to put it to good use in the mean time.
So that’s where you come in. For two weekends before and during the Olympic games, Jack and Sarah invite you to their Eat the Olympics experience. Diners will marvel at a set dressed space and dishes created by a collective of young foodies. Expect a feast for the eyes and stomach.
The good news is that diners get to have a go too, if they want to, of course. Jack and Sarah will provide the main course and dessert but are challenging their guests to create their own appetizer from a country delegated by them. If you do, they will shave £10 off the bill.
Bookings are now open for the following dates:
Saturday 28th July (dinner)
Sunday 29th July (lunch)
Saturday 4th August (dinner)
Sunday 5th August (lunch)
