Peaky Blinders and Rambert: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby

A new dance theatre event, from the global hit television series Peaky Blinders, will have its world premiere at Birmingham Hippodrome, where it runs from 27 September to 2 October and then moves to London’s Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre (12 October – 6 November) before embarking on a 2023 tour.

Dance – By Order Of The Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby is written and adapted for the stage by Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight CBE and is directed and choreographed by Benoit Swan Pouffer of world renowned dance company Rambert. The production will showcase the 20 permanent Rambert dancers on stage, with a live band for an eclectic ‘Peaky’ soundtrack.

You might have already seen Rambert perform excerpts of Swan Lake in series five at Tommy Shelby’s now lavish house and in September 2019, Pouffer choreographed a Rambert performance at the first official Peaky Blinders festival, a weekend event held in the Digbeth and Small Heath areas of Birmingham, where the original gang who inspired the series were based.

This is Rambert’s first collaboration of this kind and through dance and theatre picks up the story of the Peaky Blinders at the end of World War One in the trenches where the young men of the tunnelling brigade, are dead inside but not buried.  Before following Tommy Shelby and Grace Burgess through their passionate love affair. While Tommy is building his empire, Grace is operating as an undercover agent for Special Branch on a mission to get close to the heart of Tommy’s gang. As the story unfolds, many hearts and no doubt stage props are broken.

Steven Knight said “Peaky Blinders has always had music and movement at its core and now the beating heart of the show will be transferred to the stage, an interpretation of Tommy’s story. This is dance for people who don’t usually watch dance and what I’ve written has been transformed into something startling by consummate dancers and choreographers who take emotion and turn it into movement.”

We can’t wait!
