Spotlight has been created by a team with a long history of producing exclusive destination retreats and live events around the world. Over the past six years, more than 500 guests have joined nine destination retreats across four continents.

Meet the Stars
Alfie Boe OBE is widely celebrated as one of Britain’s greatest tenors, executing a versatile career that transitions effortlessly from opera stages to chart-topping studio albums. Beyond his massive global arena tours, he is best known to theatre lovers for his definitive portrayal of Jean Valjean. His blockbuster run at the Queen’s Theatre famously anchored the production during the spectacular era that saw it take home Best West End Show at the 2013 WhatsOnStage Awards.
Lea Salonga is true musical theatre royalty. The multi-award-winning actress and singer shot to international superstardom when she originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon, sweeping both the Tony and Olivier Awards. Known to millions globally as the singing voice of Disney’s Princess Jasmine (Aladdin) and Mulan, her stellar stage career also includes a historic run in Les Misérables and a starring role in the ground-breaking 2023 Broadway debut of Here Lies Love.
Attendance is deliberately limited, allowing each Spotlight journey to remain personal and unlike a traditional theatre event. The first in the series, Spotlight: South Africa, will take place from 7th–11th August 2027 at the award-winning Kapama Private Game Reserve, in South Africa’s Greater Kruger region.
Over five days, guests will experience musical theatre in an entirely new way, combining private safari adventures and luxury hospitality with specially curated performances by Alfie Boe and Lea Salonga.
Into the Wild: The Safari Experience
By day, the guests head into Kapama’s Big Five territory, with safari game drives in search of lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Conservation is at the heart of Kapama, with the reserve dedicated to protecting its wildlife and natural habitat through extensive research and anti-poaching programmes.

By night, the focus turns to conversation and music, with performances unfolding against the backdrop of the African wilderness. Candid conversations about their careers will sit alongside intimate musical performances crafted specifically for the occasion, creating moments that could never be recreated in a conventional theatre.

Adam Howard, music director of Spotlight, said: “Spotlight: South Africa isn’t a concert with a safari attached. We wanted to create something that simply couldn’t exist in a traditional theatre – five days where the music, the stories and the landscape are woven together. You might spend the morning watching elephants move across the reserve, the afternoon hearing Lea or Alfie share stories, and the evening listening to some of the greatest songs in musical theatre beneath the African sky.”
Five-Star Bush Luxury
The internationally acclaimed Kapama River Lodge will become home to the Spotlight group for the duration of the experience. Performances and conversations with Boe and Salonga will be woven into the rhythm of safari life, alongside private safari drives, guided bush walks, sundowners in the reserve and candlelit dinners beneath the stars.
Alfie Boe said: “I’ve performed in some incredible theatres around the world, but there’s something exciting about taking the music somewhere completely unexpected. Safari by day and music by night, perhaps even with a lion roaring in the distance!”
Lea Salonga added: “What I love about the idea of Spotlight is that it takes that distance away. To spend several days in a place as extraordinary as South Africa, sharing our love for music in such a unique location is something completely different.”

💭 The bottom line

This sounds like an absolute dream for anyone obsessed with musical theatre. The West End can often feel a bit detached when you’re sitting twenty rows back in a dark auditorium. Dropping icons like Lea Salonga and Alfie Boe into an intimate luxury lodge, stripping away the stage barriers, and adding a backdrop of wild leopards and lions is a seriously inspired piece of event curation. It’s experiential entertainment at its absolute peak. Of course, the big question right now is: how much is this going to set us back? 5-star Kruger safaris aren’t known for being budget-friendly, and when you layer in world-class Broadway talent, it’s safe to say this will be a premium investment. We won’t know the exact packages until pre-sale bookings open on October 7th. As soon as those numbers drop, I’ll update this section with my full breakdown of the pricing and whether it delivers true value for money. Stay tuned!

At $9,890 per person (based on double occupancy), Spotlight: South Africa sits firmly in the ultra-luxury travel bracket. To put that into perspective, a standard, non-event four-night stay at Kapama’s five-star lodges during the peak August season typically commands between $3,600 and $4,100 per person. This puts the ‘Spotlight Premium’ at roughly $5,800. For that margin, you are stepping away from a standard holiday and funding a highly exclusive, micro-attendance cultural event that simply cannot be bought anywhere else on earth.
By breaking down the meticulously curated, all-inclusive itinerary at the five-star Kapama Private Game Reserve, the value proposition of this premium becomes undeniably clear:
    • Elite Accommodations: A 5-day, 4-night stay at one of South Africa’s premier award-winning luxury safari lodges.
    • Seamless Logistics: Included round-trip ground airport transfers between the local airport (Hoedspruit) and the reserve, ensuring a stress-free arrival and departure straight to the lodge.
    • Unrivalled Access: Intimate, small-scale evening concerts with West End and Broadway royalty Alfie Boe and Lea Salonga set against the majestic backdrop of the African wilderness.
    • Exclusive Storytelling: Private “In Conversation” sessions with the headliners, offering a rare peek behind the curtain of their legendary careers.
    • Portfolio-Worthy Wildlife Photography: Twice-daily private safari game drives in Big Five territory. Because Kapama is a private reserve, vehicle numbers are strictly limited, giving you unobstructed, low-crowd angles to capture the dramatic African “golden hour” light.
    • The “Fully Present” Luxury Vibe: Professional event photographers will document the intimate evening concerts and backstage chats, allowing guests to keep their smartphones tucked away and simply soak in the acoustics under the stars.
    • Gourmet Hospitality: Full board featuring fine dining, premium local wines, and unforgettable candlelit dinners beneath the African night sky.

Our Verdict: Is it worth it?
While it requires a quite a financial investment, true luxury is defined by exclusivity and access. This isn’t just about booking a luxury room; it’s about the sheer magic of the setting. Imagine sitting around a roaring fire pit inside a traditional, star-lit African Boma, wine glass in hand, while West End icons perform acoustic sets just steps away from you under the open night sky. For a masterfully curated journey that flawlessly blends world-class musical theatre with the raw beauty of the Greater Kruger region, it represents an unparalleled return on experience.
If you want to secure your place in the herd, priority registration is currently open on the official booking page at Spotlight Retreats. Pre-sale bookings open on Wednesday 7 October 2026 at 2 PM UK time (9 AM ET), with general public sales launching on 9 October 2026.
Events of this calibre are strictly limited and will sell out incredibly fast—make sure your reminders are set.
