A bold new chapter for Seven Dials Playhouse, as the venue renews its role as a dynamic creative hub for theatre makers and performers in the heart of London’s West End.
As an unsubsidised charitable organisation, Seven Dials Playhouse has taken decisive steps to secure its future. The sale of the lease on its building in 2024, allowed it to clear significant historical debt accrued since its purchase in 1994.
With a new curated programming model, a series of innovative artist development programmes, and an expanded commitment to inclusivity and sustainability, the organisation is evolving its mission to support artists at every stage of their careers – from first spark to fully realised production.
Highlights include:
- A refreshed artist development strand, featuring “first steps”, “Next Step”, and the brand new Sketch Comedy Collective.
“first steps” and “Next Step” provide free rehearsal space and pay participating artists at Equity minimum rates, offering vital funded time for experimentation, development, and performance. The Sketch Comedy Collective is a subsidised 12-week programme for performers looking to hone their comedic craft, culminating in a public showcase – with selected participants forming a paid sketch comedy residency at the venue.
- A fully curated Pride Mini-Season launching in June 2025 – the first of several themed curated seasons to come, designed to platform bold, distinctive voices from across the theatre landscape.
- The continuation of 7from7, in partnership with Pleasance – an accelerator programme supporting companies taking work to the Edinburgh Fringe with funding, rehearsal space, and mentorship.
- A welcoming, open-door café and bar space for creatives to connect and collaborate, offering free WiFi and a £5 bottomless tea and coffee deal – creating a genuinely affordable hotdesking option for artists working in the city.
- The café and bar will open daily from 10am to 6pm.
As part of its open-door ethos, members of the Seven Dials Playhouse team will regularly be available in the café for informal drop-in conversations, offering guidance on applications, artist initiatives, and ways to get involved – further breaking down barriers and making support more accessible to all.
