Theatre Preview: Daniel’s Husband from Plastered Productions at Marylebone Theatre

Hit Off-Broadway play Daniel’s Husband to make its UK premiere at Marylebone Theatre for a limited season from 4 December 2025 to 10 January 2026.

Michael McKeever’s play Daniel’s Husband, directed by Alan Souza is an unflinching look at the nature of love. Daniel’s Husband asks us – among other things – to consider where our strongest convictions live: in our hearts or in our minds.

Daniel and Mitchell live a meticulously curated life; they have successful careers, a beautifully appointed home, devoted friends, and a profound love for one another. But an unexpected crisis jeopardises their boundlessly bright future, shaking the foundation of their relationship and testing the strength of their devotion.

Daniel’s Husband wrestles with the nature of commitment and the complexities of our intricately layered beliefs.

Director Alan Souza commentsI always think the best plays allow a wealth of insight into the human condition, acting as powerful stimulants for personal reflection and evolution. At its core, Daniel’s Husband seems both a humanist parable as well as a persuasive polemic for marriage. It challenges audiences in essential ways, urging us to confront and re-evaluate our most personal ideas of what family means. Intricately layered and emotionally gripping, I look forward to bringing the play to London audiences.

Producer Plastered Productions “we make plays with purpose, in that light, we know that Daniel’s Husband is the perfect play for our inaugural production in London. We hope that this production inspires vital reflections on the nature of marriage, companionship, and the morality of our choices in the face of uncertainty.”

DANIEL’S HUSBAND had its world premiere at Wilton Manors’ Island City Stage in 2015, and won three Carbonell Awards, including Best New Work. In 2017 the show was produced by the historic Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City, where it was nominated for an Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Work and returned in 2018 to New York City in a commercial production at the Westside Theatre Upstairs. It has since had various productions across the United States and around the world.

DANIEL’S HUSBAND will be directed by Alan Souza with set & costume design by Lee Newby, lighting design by Jamie Platt, sound design by Sarah Weltman, casting by Arthur Carrington, artwork by Steph Pyne Design, general management by James Steel Productions and production management by Charlie Rayner for Production Solutions Group.

Director Alan Souza

Alan Souza (Director) is as highly regarded for his vital, re-imagined versions of classic plays and musicals as he is for his stirring development of new works. He recently made his critically acclaimed London directorial debut with the world premiere play Remembrance Monday. He worked in conjunction with the Lerner Estate on his post-modern and highly celebrated Camelot for the Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago, where he also mounted a rather progressive and highly stylized take on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and a provocative, madcap, Vegas-themed Joseph…Dreamcoat. His 10-person Oliver! was solicited by Stage Entertainment and had its inaugural production at the Human Race Theatre Company, with choreography by Spencer Liff.

Alan has directed plays and musicals for Laguna Playhouse, Olney Theatre, Arkansas Repertory, Walnut Street Theatre, The New Theatre, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Virginia Musical Theatre, 3D Theatricals, Texas Shakespeare Festival, Casa Mañana, and the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport, among others. He also directed the National Tour of a new version of Xanadu, starring Drag Race superstars Ginger Minj and Jinkx Monsoon. He has also directed many world premieres, including The Little Hours (based on the short stories of Dorothy Parker), Exposure Time, and Multiple Family Dwelling for NJ Repertory, Mourning the Living at the Abingdon Theatre in NYC, and Death Valley: A Love Story for the Springfield Contemporary Theatre. He has been nominated for both the Joseph Jefferson Award and the Carbonell Award, has received multiple Edgerton Foundation Grants for New Works, has had his work recorded for the National Theatre Archive, and is a frequent podcast guest. Alan also believes in giving back to our community. In that light he has directed original benefit performances on Broadway for both the Actors Fund of America and the Christopher Reeve Foundation. And he conceived and directed the star-studded virtual variety show Oasis, benefitting the Ali Forney Center.
