St James Theatre is the first new theatre complex to open in central London for 30 years. It features a 312 seat theatre, a 100 seat studio theatre plus a sophisticated brasserie (opens 21 September) and lobby bar offering food, fine wines and cocktails. It promises to prove a vibrant addition to the London cultural scene offering an elegant location for conferences and special events, with the bar and restaurant open for all-day dining. Additionally, the theatre has been fitted with state-of-the-art multi-media broadcast facilities which will be used to broadcast performances on the venue’s own satellite TV channel.
The Theatre was officially opened by Evgeny Lebedev, owner of The Evening Standard and The Independent at a VIP champagne reception. Other guests at the Gala included Griff Rhys Jones, Game Of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, Glynis Barber, Isla Blair, Peter Bowles, Gurinder Chadha, Wendy Craig, Nancy Dell’Olio, Lord Julian Fellowes, Geraldine James, Howard Goodall, Nicolas Kent, Belinda Lang, Cameron Mackintosh, Sarah Miles, Esther Rantzen, Stephen Poliakoff, Max Stafford Clark, Cleo Rocos and St James Ambassador Richard Brecker.
The first four shows embody what the founders hope will be the trademark philosophy of the St. James; “an exciting mix of the highest quality theatre, embracing drama, comedy and musical theatre, new work and classical revivals.”
