Last night I dreamt of tapas and sangria in the tropical island breeze where the sun set so high and listened to a Spanish lullaby.
Save yourself the trip to La Isla Bonita and come to Cabot Square in Canary Wharf where to the sounds of cold water rushing from the fountains, in the shade of the trees under a string of naked light bulbs is the magic summer terrace of Iberica restaurants serving fantastic pinchos and seductive cava cocktails.
Pinchos are savoury bites from northern Spain, similar to tapas but spiked with toppings onto a piece of bread – like the squid atop a sea-green bread of parsley and garlic or the Butifarra sausage burgers with pickled fennel.
Top taste is the papas arrugas with Canarian cheese, posh potato skins that really knocks patas bravas out of the park. The Cava Sangria – for me, the new Aperol Spritz – fresh and uplifting with sliced oranges, brandy, liqueur, mint and plump blackberries in large pitcher topped with sparkling cava.
It’s a place for friends to meet and share a Porron – the traditional glass wine pitcher typically taken to the beach or a picnic without the need for drinking glasses.
When it’s time for siesta you can watch them go by and it all seems like yesterday, not far away. La Isla Iberica. – opposite their restaurant on Cabot Square, Canary Wharf.
