Goode & Wright French Bistro with a British accent opens in Notting Hill

Goode & Wright is a new restaurant situated on Portobello Road, London.

It’s the first solo venture by Chef Finlay Logan and restaurant manager Jimmy Tardy, who, between them have headed up a number of London establishments, including Ottolenghi and Proud Cabaret. Coming from different backgrounds and countries, Finlay and Jimmy nevertheless bonded on the style, culinary focus and general direction of their new enterprise; successfully creating an Anglo Franco restaurant concept – a ‘French bistro with a proper British accent’.

Goode & Wright’s seasonal A La Carte Menu boasts simple but sophisticatedly prepared bistro favourites using fresh British ingredients. Finlay’s talents especially shine with his plats du jour and weekly specials, where he bases his recipes around more unusual ingredients and adventurous cuts of meat to create exciting and innovative Anglo-Franco dishes.

Working in rhythm with the seasons, and preferring the inspiring and the less predictable, Finlay’s produce is fresh and sourced from niche, local suppliers. An example of this is Boulangerie de Paris, a wholesaler of incredible tasting breads that uses artisanal methods of production learnt from one of the few remaining true Master Bakers of France. All of their breads are baked in a century old, reclaimed wood-fire oven which gives them their distinctive favour. The sourdough breads are all baked and delivered on a daily basis, and are completely free from artificial chemicals and preservatives.

With a separate brunch and dinner menu, as well as a daily specials menu, guests can choose from popular bistro favourites or pick from a selection of more daring dishes.

Examples from the menu include:

Specials
Panfried black breem served with pickled cucumber and a broad bean puree
Saucisson sec tartine served with an apple and celeriac remoulade

Dinner
Duck egg in a basket with chorizo and truffle honey (£9.50)
G&W steak bavette served with frites and roast marrowbones (£18.50)
Slow roast pork with celeriac and black pudding mash and tarragon mustard (£15.50)
Leafy lemon posset with Eton Mess (£5.50)

With classic bistro décor – wood panels and black and white chequered floor – and an open kitchen, the restaurant has a convivial atmosphere that is loud, noisy and busy. Diners should not expect hushed silence, countless expensive courses and fawning waiters. Instead, the service is friendly and welcoming and the food is high quality but not overpriced. Jimmy’s warm and personable nature makes every customer feel like a local and he is not content until his customers have left considerably happier than they were when they arrived.
