La Hechicera – the Colombian Rum Enchantress

logo

Bienvenido to Colombian rum La Hechicera,  a serious contender in the grown-ups drinks cabinet. Described as ‘exotically Latin with a dash of danger,’ the same could be said for the glamorous Riascos family, founders of the brand.  Theirs is a story of banana plantations, guerilla kidnap, unsigned deals with Fidel Castro and the gentle sway of Caribbean palms.  Now the only family owned private estate in Colombia, the Riascos are bringing their unsweetened, additive-free fine aged rum to less exotic UK shores.

La Hechicera means ‘enchantress,’ and she has been immortalised as the praying mantis on the label.  With its two grasping, spiked forelegs in which prey are caught and held securely, such is the pull of this drink you will be captive too.

La Hechicera Colombian Rum will hold you in its grip!

The family has escaped the typical four-year cycle of the state-owned liquor factories that churn out three-year-old white rums in tetrapak to focus on aged rum in American white oak casks.  Gathering raw distillates from around the Caribbean, typically Venezuela and Trinidad, the master blenders use the solera method of  fractional blending in such a way that the finished product is a mixture of ages.

Then treating the rum as a person, focusing not on age but on maturity, before releasing a limited number of bottles onto the market. Colombia with its long Caribbean coastline, high snow-capped mountains and one of the most bio diverse countries in the world puts sexy, sophisticated rum back on the map.

La Hechicera has been fast to scoop up international awards for quality.  Breaking out beyond the rum category, La Hechicera is unusually being poured as an alternative to bourbon and whiskies in cocktails like the Manhattan and Old Fashioned.
