Hollywood Noir Meets Political Intrigue: Janie Dee to Star in Sir Trevor Nunn’s ‘Speculations’ at Marylebone Theatre

If you have been tracking our regular coverage of the Marylebone Theatre, you already know why leading theatre commentator Lyn Gardner has praised it as “increasingly essential.” Having previously raved about their stellar past programming—including the deeply moving drama Daniel’s Husband and the brilliant coup of securing Sir Mark Rylance for both his sold-out performance of Venus and Adonis and his recent run in Tartuffe (Remixed) – we always keep a close eye on their season announcements.

For our latest Culture Radar, we are locking our sights firmly on a major autumn world premiere that seamlessly bridges mid-century American history, high-stakes political paranoia, and premium West End pedigree.

In an exciting co-production with the formidable Wild Yak Productions, Marylebone Theatre has officially extended its upcoming thriller, Speculations (On the Unexplained Deaths of Several American Icons), adding two extra weeks to its limited run due to phenomenal demand. The production will now run from 30 October 2026 to 17 January 2027.

The Story: Who Silenced Dorothy Kilgallen?

Set against the backdrop of a volatile New York City in 1965, Speculations follows the final, dangerous investigation of celebrated journalist and television star Dorothy Kilgallen (played by Olivier Award-winner Janie Dee).

While the American public has been fed the official narratives surrounding the shocking deaths of Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy, and Lee Harvey Oswald, Kilgallen refuses to accept the sanitised history. Her relentless digging uncovers a toxic web connecting Hollywood studios, the Kennedy dynasty, the White House, and the dark underbelly of the New Orleans mafia. As anonymous threats begin to circle her inner circle, Kilgallen is forced to decide if exposing the ultimate truth is worth risking her life.

A West End Powerhouse Creative Team

Playwright Torben Betts has crafted a taut script that challenges what we think we know about 1960s history. Bringing this historical noir to life is Sir Trevor Nunn, whose legendary direction promises to transform the Marylebone stage into a cinematic, suspense-filled pressure cooker. As Lyn Gardner has astutely noted of London’s theatrical landscape, the presence of veteran visionaries like Nunn paired with the brilliant Janie Dee proves that the industry’s senior tier remains as vibrant, sharp, and essential as ever.

Joining the duo on stage is an exceptional ensemble cast featuring Jolyon Coy, Natalie Dunne, Gloria Obianyo, Joseph Potter, and Ferdy Roberts. Behind the scenes, the visual landscape is shaped by a stellar design team, including Lee Newby (Design), Johanna Town (Lighting), and Gregory Clarke (Sound).

An Exclusive Icon-Inspired Ticket Offer

To celebrate the production and what would have been Marilyn Monroe’s 100th Birthday, Marylebone Theatre has teamed up with Piper-Heidsieck—Marilyn’s lifelong champagne of choice.

MANinLONDON readers can access an exclusive premium theatre experience for the first two weeks of the run (performances between 30 October and 13 November). By using the special promotional code, booking a Premium Seat unlocks an elevated evening out in Marylebone.

  • The Premium Upgrade: Secure premium seating, a complimentary 125ml glass of Piper-Heidsieck champagne (or soft drink), and an official show programme.
  • The Code: Use code EARLYBIRDCHAMPAGNE at checkout.
  • Validity: Valid only for performances from Friday 30 October through Friday 13 November.

Given the early box office momentum and this strictly limited extension, this is bound to be one of the most talked-about dramatic openings of London’s autumn arts season.

Speculations runs at the Marylebone Theatre from 30 October 2026 to 17 January 2027. Tickets are available via the official Marylebone Theatre box office.
