The 2013 Laureus World Sports Awards are to be hosted at the Theatro Municipal, in the heart of Rio de Janeiro.

The shortlists for this year’s categories are dominated by the stand-out performers from the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, with Baumgartner himself nominated in the World Action Sportsperson of the Year category in acknowledgement of his 127,000 ft. record-breaking jump from the edge of space last October.

Arriving in Rio De Janeiro this weekend ahead of the awards, Felix Baumgartner showed off his famous head for heights by scaling Sugar Loaf Mountain, where he was joined by 10 children from a local Laureus Sport for Good Foundation community project, which is committed to the use of sport as the means to improve the lives of young people.

Earlier in the weekend, Sir Steve Redgrave joined some young rowers for a training session on Lake Logoa in Rio, which will host the rowing and canoeing regattas at the 2016 Rio Olympic & Paralympic Games. Sir Steve was also joined a group of local schoolchildren who had the opportunity to try rowing for the first time.

New Zealand rugby legend Sean Fitzpatrick also visited a local martial arts and boxing project in the city.
