Poppies Fish and Chips of Camden

Poppies Fish and Chips logoFollowing a hugely successful two years Poppies Fish and Chips of Spitalfields is opening a sister restaurant on Hawley Crescent in Camden, North London.

What started as a labour of love to indulge 70 year-old master fryer and owner, Pat Newland’s hobby and personal interests has proved to be a great success and so Pat is taking his mission to bring the best possible traditional East End fish and chips across town to Camden.

Poppies Fish and Chips NOW in Camden

The success of Poppies is undoubtedly down to the exceptional quality that comes with the attention to detail Pat and his team pay to the food.  The chips are peeled and handcut on site from British farmed maris piper potatoes supplied by a 4th generation family business; the fish – delivered fresh every day from T Bush, a renowned third generation supplier in Billingsgate – is sustainably sourced and harvested with great care, specifically offering Peterhead Cod, Haddock, Plaice, Rock, Sole, Mackrel, Halibut or Skate; all cooked in the most delicious crunchy fresh batter from a secret family recipe of Pat’s.  The side dishes of tartar sauce and mushy peas are handmade on site, again to specific recipes Pat has devised over the years.

The team is keen to embrace and support the local community and resident, as part of this the Camden restaurant will source from local London suppliers such as Marine Ices in Chalk Farm, ales from the Camden Brewery, Nude Coffee in Brick Lane, sausages from the Ginger Pig in Marylebone and bread rolls baked in Wapping.   Pat and his team of fish and chip veterans, also offer home-made fish cakes, whole-tail scampi, whitebait, hand peeled prawns, and that staple of the East End diet, jellied eels.

The brand new 110-seater restaurant is reminiscent of London in the 40s and 50s – complete with a restored 1948 vintage 1100 Jukebox and an original 40s projector with home reels, reclaimed cinema seating, original pendant lighting and a period six-seater bar.  The memorabilia will be set against a back-drop of traditionally made Victorian floor and wall tiles.

Spread over two floors, there is the restaurant, served by ‘Popettes’ which also does take-away, seating upstairs to browse the library of war books and comics over coffee; and in keeping with the 1940s scene, a lounge and piano for local performers.

Open from 11am-11pm, seven days a week, customers can dine in with wine or take out.
